Film festival on wildlife has begun in Shimla
A three-day Woodpecker Environment and Wildlife Film Festival has begun at historic Gaiety Theatre in Shimla. 

The festival is being organized by WWF-India in collaboration with CMSR foundation, Delhi with the support of the Himachal Pradesh’s Department of Language, Art and culture and Department of Forest.

India sets up apparel training centre in Nigeria
India has set up an apparel training centre in Nigeria to support textiles industry of the west African country. 
This is a first of its kind centre in Nigeria, set up in partnership with their government. 
The centre has been established in Kaduna, Nigeria under the Cotton Technical Assistance Programme for Africa.
Govt to clean 10 iconic places under ‘Swachh Bharat Mission’
The government will carry out a drive to clean ten iconic places in the country as part of a pilot project under the ‘Swachh Bharat mission’.
The places which have been selected are Vaishno Devi temple in Jammu and Kashmir, Taj Mahal in Uttar Pradesh, Tirupati temple in Andhra Pradesh, Golden Temple in Punjab, Ajmer Sharif in Rajasthan, Jagannath temple in Orissa, Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus in Maharashtra, Manikarnika Ghat in Uttar Pradesh, Meenakshi Temple in Tamil Nadu and Kamakhya Temple in Assam.
West Bengal to set up three biotechnology hubs
The West Bengal Government has taken up a project to set up three biotechnology hubs across the state to bring in more biotechnology innovations to the State.
The three proposed biotechnology hubs will come in Bardhaman, Kalimpong and Medinipur districts.
DRDO inks pact with IITs for Centre for Propulsion Technology
The Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has signed an agreement with IIT-Bombay and Madras to establish a bi-nodal ‘Centre of Propulsion Technology’ (CoPT) at the two institutions.
The initiative is aimed at achieving synergy between DRDO and IITs for channelising the research efforts towards developing products and technologies.

South African writer Lidudumalingani Mqombothi wins 2016 Caine Prize
South African writer Lidudumalingani Mqombothi has won the ‘2016 The Caine Prize’ for African Writing for his story ‘Memories we Lost’. 
The prize, launched in 2000, is awarded annually to an African writer of a short story published in English.

Jayaram crashes out of U.S. Open

Ajay Jayaram crashed out of the U.S. Open after suffering a straight-game loss to Japan’s Kanta Tsuneyama in the men’s singles semifinals of the Grand Prix Gold badminton tournament on Sunday.
The World No. 22 and fourth seed could not match the intensity of his rival and lost 10-21 14-21 in 33 minutes at the Los Angeles Badminton Club.
The 28-year-old could not step up his game against the Japanese, who led 4-2 at the start and then broke off at 6-6 and never looked back.
From 8-7, Tsuneyama reeled off 10 straight points to create a huge gap, which Jayaram could not bridge.
In the second game, Jayaram put up a better show and opened up a slender 3-1 lead. The duo then fought till 14-14 when Tsuneyama sealed the issue in his favour with seven points straight.

Pakistani philanthropist Abdul Sattar Edhi passes away
Noted Pakistani philanthropist, social activist, ascetic and humanitarian Abdul Sattar Edhi (92-year) has passed away in Karachi.
Edhi was the founder and head of the Edhi Foundation in Pakistan and known as Angel of Mercy, Pakistan’s ‘Father Teresa’ and was considered country’s most respected figure.
