1st US-Cuba Commercial Flight
The first commercial flight between the United States & Cuba in more than a half century landed in the central city of Santa Clara


A JetBlue Airways Corp passenger jet arrived from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in the central Cuban city of Santa Clara
It was the first direct commercial flight between the US & Cuba in over a half-century.
It’s the first such trip since the height of the Cold War.
Gabon’s President Bongo Re-elected
Gabon’s incumbent President Ali Bongo has won a closely fought presidential election.
Bongo had obtained 49.80 percent of  vote, beating  rival candidate Jean Pin who received 48.23 percent.
He  was first elected in 2009 after the death of his father Omar, who ran Gabon for 42 years.
Gabon is a sovereign state on the west coast of Central Africa.
Brazilian Senate Impeaches Rousseff
Brazil’s Senate has removed President, Dilma Rousseff, from the office for breaking budgetary laws.
This ends an impeachment process that polarized the country and paralyzed its politics for nine months.
Senators voted 61 to 20 to convict Ms Rousseff for illegally using money from state banks to boost public spending.
Michel Temer has been sworn in as 37th President of the country.

MoU between MoUD & Amar Chitra Katha
The Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD) signed a MoU with Amar Chitra Katha to publish & distribute a special edition of the comic book, focusing on Swachh Bharat Mission.
The 32-page comic book will carry messages pertaining to sanitation & solid waste components of Swachh Bharat Mission.
The book would comprise a series of inspirational stories from the mission.
Regional News Editors’ Conference Begins
Information and Broadcasting Minister Venkaiah Naidu has inaugurated Regional News Editors’ Conference in Chennai.
The conference is Organized by the Press Information Bureau.
The two day conference will discuss the policies and initiatives of key Ministries.
The participants will be apprised of the key programs and roadmap for the future pertaining to flagship schemes.
BRICS Convention on Tourism Begins
The two day “BRICS Convention on Tourism” has began at World heritage site, Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh.
The BRICS countries India, Brazil, Russia, China & South Africa will participate in the convention.
The event will comprise of inter- governmental exchange of views & ideas on different subjects.
The convention is being organised as a precursor to The BRICS Summit to be held in Goa in Oct.
Gowda Inaugurated 8th Meet of SAARCSTAT
Union Minister Shri. D.V. Sadananda Gowda inaugurated the 8th Meeting of Heads of SAARC Statistical Organizations (SAARCSTAT) in New Delhi.
The theme of this Meeting is “Trade Statistics – Merchandise & Services”.
Reducing Asymmetry in Trade data amongst SAARC countries is one of the topics for discussion in this meeting.
India has taken up the issues of data reconciliation with a few countries.
Maha, Guj governors given add’l charge
President Pranab Mukherjee has given Maharashtra Governor C. Vidyasagar Rao additional charge of Tamil Nadu.
He has also made Gujarat Governor Om Prakash Kohli in-charge of Madhya Pradesh.
The tenure of Tamil Nadu Governor K. Rosaiah ended on Tuesday while that of Madhya Pradesh Governor Ram Naresh Yadav will come to an end on September 7.
Goa Assembly ratifies GST Bill
The Goa Legislative Assembly has unanimously passed a resolution ratifying the amendments to the Constitution to pave way for the presidential assent to the Goods and Services (GST) Bill, 2016.
Goa is the 15th State Assembly to ratify the Bill.
With this, 50% of States have passed the Bill paving way for the presidential assent.
India at 35th Rank in WB Logistics Index
India has ranked 35 among 160 countries on World Bank’s Logistics Performance Index (LPI) for 2016.
India’s position on the global list has improved by 19 places compared to the previous list
The World Bank LPI is released every two years.
The logistics’ list was topped by Germany.
The LPI measures performance at key international gateways in countries such as India and China.

Anuradha: New MD & CEO of SBI Mutual
SBI Mutual Fund has appointed Anuradha Rao as its Managing Director and Chief Executive.
She was Deputy Managing Director at SBI handling New Business Portfolio.
She has also worked as the Chief General Manager of personal banking at the bank.
She took charge from Dinesh Kumar Khara, who has been appointed Managing Director of State Bank of India (Associate & Subsidiaries).
Chawla Appointed Chancellor of TERI Uni
The Energy and Resources Institute (Teri) has appointed former Finance Secretary Ashok Chawla as the new Chancellor of Teri university.
With this, the University ended its last association with former Chancellor and Head R.K. Pachauri.
Chawla has also been serving as the Chairman of Teri since February 2016.
The Energy and Resources Institute was established in 1974.

England Sets World Record ODI Score
England amassed a world record one-day international total of 444 for three as they crushed Pakistan by 169 runs at Trent Bridge n the five-match series.
The hosts passed their previous highest total of 408 for nine, made against New Zealand last year.
England Hales plundered 171, the highest individual limited-overs score by an England batsman.
Pakistan, in reply, were bowled out for 275.
Ashwin Slips to 3rd in ICC Test Rankings
Off-spinner R Ashwin dropped a rung to 3rd but remained the highest-placed Indian bowler.
Ajinkya Rahane at 8th in the batsmen’s list of the latest ICC Test rankings .
Rahane was the lone Indian in the top-10 of batting charts.
South Africa pace bowler Dale Steyn stormed back to the number-one position rankings for Test bowlers.
India stands 2nd in the list of test rankings team behind Pakistan.

RBI to Regulate P2P Lending
The RBI has proposed that peer-to-peer lending platforms would be regulated as a separate category of NBFCs.
Peer-to-peer (P2P) lending is a form of crowd-funding with financial returns.
Borrowers and lenders are brought together online with the help of the P2P lending platform, which is used to raise unsecured finance.
The rates are lower than those offered by money lenders/unorganised sector.

One of World’s Biggest Rhino Horns Found
The rhino horn verification committee (RHVC) has found one of the world’s largest horns in central Assam’s Nagaon treasury.
According to forest officials, the massive horn belonged to the Bagori range of Kaziranga National Park & it was found in Aug,1982.
The horn weighs 3 kg and 51 grams and its height is 36 cm.

The only recorded horn bigger than this could be found in the British Museum, London
