Indian-American Inducted in Hall Of Fame
Renu Khator, Indian-American woman academic will be inducted into the Texas Women Hall of Fame.


She will be inducted for making significant contribution for the benefit of the US’ second largest state.
She is the first Indian-American to lead a major research university in the US,
She is also the president of University of Houston main campus.
She was born in Uttar Pradesh’s Farrukhabad district.
Indo-Canadian 1st woman Leader of House
Indo-Canadian Sikh MP Bardish Chagger has been named as the new Leader of the government in Canada’s House of Commons.
She becomes the first woman to hold the post in the country’s history.
She was sworn in as Minister of Small Business and Tourism & will retain her title as the Ministe.
She is one of the four Sikh Canadians inducted into PM Trudeau’s Cabinet.
China Opens World’s Longest Glass Bridge
The world’s highest and longest glass bridge has opened to visitors in central China.
The 430-metre long, 6-metre wide glass-bottomed walkway hangs 300 metres above a canyon in the Tianmenshan National Forest Park in Hunan province, central China.
It has been paved with 99 panes of three-layered transparent glass.
The bridge has set 10 world records for design and construction.

India Ranks 39th in Asia Pacific
India ranks a low 39th in terms of fixed broadband adoption among Asia Pacific countries.
With just 1.3% Indians subscribing to such a service in 2015.
This was according to a study by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP).
Hong Kong, New Zealand & Japan& Macao topped the list of 53 countries covered in the report.
BRICS Conference of Women MPs Ends
A two-day meeting of BRICS women parliamentarians will conclude in Jaipur, Rajasthan.
Several issues related to climate change, gender equality, education and health were discussed at the meeting.
Parliamentarians of BRICS countries shared their experiences on these issues.
Total 43 parliamentarians from BRICS countries including 28 MPs from Lok Sabha & Rajya Sabha participated in the meeting.
Pasighat Airfield Gets Operational
The upgraded Advanced Landing Ground (ALG) at Pasighat in Arunachal Pradesh was inaugurated by MoS for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju.
The landing ground became operational with the first landing of the fighter jet Su-30 MKI .
It will facilitate air connectivity with rest of the country.
The airfield is situated just 100 km from the China border
World’s first Leprosy Vaccine Developed
The first exclusive vaccine for leprosy that was developed in India will be launched in a few weeks.
This was said Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda .
Five districts in Bihar and Gujarat will be chosen for the pilot phase.
The vaccine, mycobacterium indicus Pranii (MIP), will be administered as a preventive measure for people living in close contact with those infected by the bacteria.

Director Goutam Ghosh’s National award-winning film Sankhachil has been selected for the coveted 40th Montreal World Film Festival.
Sankhachil essays the pain & anguish of people living on both sides of the border following the partition of Bengal.

Pt Shiv Kumar to Get Martand Ustad Award
Santoor maestro Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma will be conferred upon with the annual Sangeet Martand Ustad Chand Khan Lifetime Achievement Award.
This was announded by Sursagar Society of Dilli Gharana.
The society has been felicitating stalwarts of Indian classical music and dance with the award since 1986.
The award aims to recognise their contribution towards enriching the art.
Sunil Mittal Re-appointed Chairman
Sunil Bharti Mittal has been re-appointed as the Chairman of telecom giant Bharti Airtel for another five year.
Mittal is the Founder of Bharti Enterprises.
It is India’s one of largest conglomerates with diversified interests in telecom, insurance, real estate, agri and food, besides other ventures.
The Group also has joint ventures with global leaders like Singtel,SoftBank,AXA amongst others.

Caster Semenya Wins 800m Gold
South Africa’s Caster Semenya won Olympic gold in the 800m.
Semenya set a national record to win in one minute 55.28 seconds and
She finish well clear of silver medallist Francine Niyonsaba of Burundi.
She was cleared to compete by the International Association of Athletics Federations in 2010 after being sidelined for 11 months.
Kenya’s Margaret Nyairera Wambui took the bronze medal.
Chen Long Wins Gold in Singles Badminton
China’s Chen Long beats Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei 21-18, 21-18 in straight games to win men’s singles gold medal in Badminton at Rio Olympics.
It was a first gold medal for world number two Chen.
The Malaysian has never won a world or Olympic title.
He lost the previous two Games finals to Chinese arch-rival Lin Dan.
Dipika & Saurav Finish Runner Up
Indian pair of Dipika Pallikal and Saurav Ghosal settled for silver medal in the mixed doubles event of the World doubles squash championship.
Dipika and Ghosal went down 8-11, 8-11 to Joelle and Paul in the final to miss the gold medal.
The other Indian mixed pair of Joshna Chinappa and Harinder Pal Sandhu along with the doubles pair of Joshna and Dipika won a bronze medal.
Brazil Win Maiden Football Gold
Brazil won its first Olympic gold medal in soccer with a penalty kick by Neymar to defeat Germany.
Neymar converted the decisive penalty in the shootout after Brazilian goalkeeper Weverton stopped Nils Petersen’s shot from the spot.
Brazil had lost the Olympic final three times.
The win means a unified Germany are now the only World Cup winners never to have won the Olympic gold medal.

Govt Allow Refugees to Open Bank A/c
Govt has issued notification allowing the Long Term Visa (LTV) holders of minority communities of Afghanistan, Bangladesh & Pakistan to open bank account and purchase property.
It also decided to issue driving licence, PAN card and Aadhar number to them.
These communities are Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, Parsis & Christians.
Their free movement within states have also been allowed.
PNB Makes Locker Visiting Facility Free
In a customer-friendly move, public sector lender Punjab National Bank (PNB) has made locker visiting facility free for its customers.
Earlier, the customers were allowed 12 free visits at lockers in an year.
Now, the PNB locker holders can make any number of visits in an year without paying any additional cost.
The new rule has been put in place so as to encourage customers.
All Homes in WB to have Power by 2017
All households in Bengal will have electricity by March 2017.
The state will achieve two years ahead of the centres deadline of 2019.
This was said by West Bengal minister for power & non-conventional energy sources, Sobhandeb Chattopadhyay in Kolkata .
He was talking at an energy conclave organised by CII.
As on today, 97% households in West Bengal have electricity.
PFC Gets Shareholders’ Nod
Power Finance Corp (PFC) has got shareholders’ approval for raising up to  55,000 crore via issue of securities.
PFC is  one of the leading lenders to the power sector.
The company has got shareholders’ nod to raise  5,000 crore by issuance of bonds for Power Ministry
PFC’s shareholders also approved the proposal to increase the authorised share capital from 2,000 crore.
RBL Bank IPO Opens
The initial public offer (IPO) of private sector bank RBL Bank, erstwhile Ratnakar Bank, opens for bidding.
It is the first private lender IPO in a decade aims to raise over Rs 1,200 crore through IPO
The bank proposes to utilize the proceeds of the fresh issue to augment Tier-I capital base to meet its future capital requirements.
It, will give the bank a valuation of over Rs 12,000 crore.
